The best moments include Steve Aoki atop his console and Simple Plan frontman in the middle of a crowd dive
They have the best seat in any concert and get to see their favourite artistes more up, close and personal than any of us. Music photographers sure have one of the most coveted jobs in the world. When I ask popular gig shutterbug Roycin D’souza what he loves most about what he does, he lists all the things enviable to a regular concert-goer. “Not being in a crowd, exclusivity, access, and uninterrupted visual treats,” says the 24-year-old professional who has covered major music festivals and concerts around the country.
We got him and three of his peers – Shalaka Pai, Parizad D and Sachin Soni – to pick some of their favourite on-stage pictures. Check them out.
1. SHALAKA PAI
Mutemath at NH7 Weekender 2014
"Mutemath live are a riot, but as I realised later, their performances and stage theatricals are so carefully planned, down to the minute. It doesn't stop them from being a lot of fun though."
Bhayanak Maut at Blue Frog
"I love and respect Bhayanak Maut so much. They are some of the nicest people that I've had the good fortune of meeting. And of course, their gigs are phenomenal. I almost didn't know I had this shot until much later but it is one of my favourites.”
Karnivol at NH7 Weekender, 2012
“They're so beautiful live, so...technical. I swear I saw a couple of people in the crowd tear up.”
2. ROYCIN D’SOUZA
Simple Plan frontman Pierre Bouvier taking a crowd dive at Mood-I, 2012
Undying Inc at B69
At the Skream gig, 2014
“The worst part (about the job is) not getting paid, asking to give away images for free after slogging for days together, the pursuit of getting access to shoot shows independently, the cost of gear vs returns on investment. Honestly, carrying gear around music festivals is a task in itself.”
3. PARIZAD D
Mutemath drummer Darren King at Harley Rock Riders, 2014
Steve Aoki at VH1 Supersonic Arcade, 2015
“This image of Steve Aoki is one of favourites. Although I am not an EDM person – I like to shoot bands more – this particular gig was very memorable for many reasons. Steve’s crew was very helpful and nice. They allowed us to move around the stage and even gave us cues to where we could get the best shots from. And of course, helped us in ensuring we don’t get caked!”
Pentagram frontman Vishal Dadlani at NH7 Weekender, 2013
4. SACHIN SONI
The Ska Vengers at Blue Frog, 2014
Monica Dogra at NH7 Weekender, 2013
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine at NH7 Weekender, 2012
