Salman Fans Give Their Verdict On The Hit-And-Run Case

Every evening, crowds gather outside Salman Khan’s home at Bandra’s Bandstand hoping to catch a glimpse of the troubled star. In the weeks after his hearing and conviction, these multitudes have grown larger and more restless. I spent an afternoon asking some of the people their thoughts about Salman and his conviction. Here’s what they said:

“Road accidents happen all the time. Since Salman was under the influence of alcohol and made a mistake, the government can fine him for that. But in my opinion, people who sleep on the road are invariably criminals. So if the government looks at it from this point of view, then Salman in fact deserves to get a National Award for this good deed (of killing criminals). He deserved to get bail as he runs many charitable organisations, and he helps the poor.”

What is your favourite Salman Khan film?
“Obviusly Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger, Bodyguard and now whatever is being released like Wanted etc (sic)."

Farzana: “What happened to him was bad, but he has everyone’s support. We are all hoping for the best; our prayers are with him.”
Ganga: “It’s a good thing that he got out on bail. He helps a lot of poor people. He even helped my mother get an eye operation.”

What is your favourite Salman Khan film?
Farzana: “Wanted.”
Ganga: “Hum Saath Saath Hain.”

“Salman Khan’s judgment is based purely on what happened that night. We aren’t even sure whether he was driving the car or not; but he claims that he was not. I don’t know if he is telling the truth, but it sounds like he’s not. Since he is a celebrity and is benefiting society with his charity work like building hospitals etc, many people will be affected if he goes to jail. However, on the other hand, the law must run its course.”

What is your favourite Salman Khan film?
“Jai Ho, Dabangg, Garv etc.”

"He should be punished but the sentence should not be so harsh that it adversely affects more people than it upholds justice. It is also the responsibility of the government to take care of people sleeping on the road. But at the same time, Salman should admit his mistake, just like Sanju baba (Sanjay Dutt, who is convicted for illegal possession of arms in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case) did."

What is your favourite Salman Khan film?
“Wanted, Garv, Jai Ho, Dabangg; basically all his movies.”

“What he did was wrong, but he is a nice person and I would like him to be set free. But since the law states that he should be punished, he would be. Hopefully, it will be a short sentence. I would be very glad if he didn’t get it, and the day he will be acquitted will be the happiest day for me because I really like him. He helps a lot of people and he is not a proud person. The day before he got bail, I prayed to one of the saints I believe in that he should be let off. Salman has signed so many films and all of them will run into losses if he goes behind bars right now. In a way our government is also doing a wrong thing by not taking care of people sleeping on the road. This time he was drunk, tomorrow someone else might also be drunk and repeat the same mistake and run away."

What is your favourite Salman Khan film?
"Maine Pyaar Kiya."

"Firstly, I am very happy that he has been bailed out; everyone is praying for him and that is obviously going to help. What happened that night was an accident; it was a mistake. He wasn’t in his senses as he had been drinking. The court should just fine him and let him go. Let see what happens at his next hearing. Salman has always been helpful to others; it’s obvious that only good can happen to him. If someone is unwell, he goes out of his way to help him or her."

What is your favourite Salman Khan film?
"It has to be Wanted."
